Out of Oil? Time to Invade...

Russian oil giant Yukos has just cut off some of its supply to China, reports the IHT, pushing up worldwide prices to $46 a barrel again.

The reasons, it would appear, are more related to Russian internal politics than international relations, but it highlights the dependency of China on oil. Power shortages are becoming a major issue over here with all kinds of dicatets flowing from the authorities in attempts to reduce over consumption.

Like anywhere else (until someone actually bothers to come up with an alternative) China's economy is entirely dependent on oil. Anyone who believes that US intervention in Iraq is completely unrelated is fooling themselves. Oil matters.

So it begs the question - if China's demand outstrips supply as it surely will, what will they do? Correct me if I'm wrong but China isn't big on its own indigenous resources. So what then? The Spratleys? Movements west into Uzbekistan etc.?

Hopefully someone somewhere is weighing up a better option than this, but sonner or later oil is going to be as big an issue in China as it is in the US.

As I recal, being cut off from oil and coal suplies was one of the main reasions that Japan invaded China and attacked Pearl harbor. Oil and coal were also behind som of German's land grabs during and prior to WWII and Russia's just afterwards.

The want of oil seems to have killed millions of people over the last century or two.

But at least in this magnificent age we live in, where what's good for America is good for the world we can now say that since it was OK for the US to invade Iraq and take its oil, then Japan was just ahead of its time when it 'liberated' China in 15 years of bloody genocidal war that killed a who knows how many million people in the proccess, and that when Germany moved in on the Saar as it geared up to invading half of the civilised world, it was OK because it was searching for nuclear weapons.

Yes, oil a simple collection of loosly bonded hydrocarbons used to fuel automobiles has killed more people in the last hundred years than all of the worlds nuclear accidents, and Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined. Yet we have treaties preventing the proliferation of the Atom Bomb, but not against enlaging oil companies.

I'm a bit wary of China's now full-blown car mania, the sort of "why walk around the corner when you can drive" attitude borrowed directly from North America.

With everyone salivating over GDP growth and dreams of a billion consumers, they seem to forget the scary truth that you point out well here: with no one taking alternative energy seriously, how will the world handle China and India's drive towards industrialization?

Not too well is my guess.

China is picking up bad habits from the US, a car is seen as a status symbol in China and people want to use their cars the same way that the US uses its cars.

We are going to see fat people choaking on traffic fumes, no infact we are already seeing fat people choaking on traffic fumes.

China is picking up some bad habits from some poor influences.
