GYANTSE
Arrival at Gyantse unveils the Kumbum Chorten, the largest stupa in Tibet. Like Borobodur, the square and circular tiers represent stages on the route to nirvana. The Pelkhor Chode monastery itself is set into the hill guarded by an ancient fortress and city wall.
