MARAMURES

The rural heart of Romania, Maramures has yet to enter the 20th century let alone the 21st. The wooden churches and monasteries at Ieud, Barsana and Surdesti have stood the test of time, however, and at Sapanta the 'Merry Cemetery' shows that there is humour even in death.
