There's more than one Shanghai. There's the Shanghai of the guidebooks and colour supplements, the Shanghai of glitz and glamour and greed. Then there's the other, Shanghai at ground level. This was my Shanghai, the city I lived in, an urban wasteland where the building never stops and the cleanup never starts.
